American Express buys Chatbot firm Mezi

American ExpressNew York-based credit card issuer American Express has acquired chatbot brand Mezi. Post this acquisition, Mezi will be a subsidiary of American Express.

Mezi assists in travel-related bookings via text messages, for an undisclosed amount.

“Mezi’s AI-powered (artificial intelligence) experience is opening up new and exciting new ways for us to get connected and serve our card holders and creates prospects for us to create more fruitful relationships with them,” Phil Norman, vice-president at American Express Digital Labs.

“With the rise of messaging service as the preferred choice for many, and the increasing demand for unique experiences, we believe the collaboration of Mezi’s capabilities along with our global network of expert travel counselors has the potential to create a differentiated, high-touch service experience for our card members,” Norman added.

Mezi was founded by entrepreneurs Swapnil Shinde and Snehal Shinde, who had earlier launched music streaming app Dhingana and sold it off to Rdio in March 2014.
