The Central Government’s flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, aimed to bank the unbanked sections of the society, has completed three years of its operation.

Jan-Dhan-YojanaDeposits worth Rs 65,844.68 crore has been recorded under the scheme and it has successfully banked 29.52 crore families, said the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, while listing the achievements of Financial Inclusion along with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday.

Aimed to ensure access to financial services, namely Banking Savings and Deposit Accounts, Remittance, Credit, Insurance, Pension for the common man, this ambitious scheme was launched by the Prime Minister on 28 August 2014.

Merely 58 per cent populace had access to bank accounts since Independence but Jan Dhan Yojana has enabled Financial Inclusion revolution and the scheme alone has generated 17.64 crore accounts in rural areas and 11.88 crore accounts in urban areas, said the Prime Minister.

Further, 22.71 crore RuPay Debit Cards were issued as a result of the scheme.

The Prime Minister’s twitter account also shared a detailed image of the success achieved by the Jan Dhan Yojna so far. It acknowledged Financial Inclusion as the foundation of New India.

“Through Jan Dhan Yojana, social security schemes, MUDRA & Stand-Up India, we have given wings to millions of aspirations,” he added in his tweet.

To estimate the impression of the scheme in the life of the common man, banks have conducted surveys and the statistics garnered are a part of the results collected.

In addition to Jan Dhan Yojna, several other initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jeewan Jyoti Bima Yojna and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna, RuPay Card and Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna were also included in this survey.

As a matter of fact, the survey has reported several inspiring stories.

“In a way, this is a saving for the poor, this is his empowerment for the future. And those who opened their accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan DhanYojna, have received the benefit of insurance as well,” the Prime Minister said.

“JAM (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile) trinity has ushered in a social revolution which will eventually bring all Indians into a common financial, economic and digital space, similar to how GST has created a unified market,” said Jaitley in his Facebook post.

“Just as GST created one tax, one market, one India, the PMJDY and the JAM revolution can link all Indians into one common financial, economic, and digital space. No Indian will be outside the mainstream,” he added.

“Within reach of the country is what might be called the 1 billion-1 billion-1 billion vision. That is 1 billion unique Aadhaar numbers linked to 1 billion bank accounts and 1 billion mobile phones. Once that is done, all of India can become part of the financial and digital mainstream,” he said.
