Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Dr. Urjit Patel has been appointed as the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a three-year term. The appointment was officially approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and announced in late August 2025. This key role entrusts Patel with representing India and neighboring countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, at the influential Washington-based institution.

Dr. Urjit Patel, an internationally acclaimed economist, served as the 24th Governor of the RBI from 2016 to 2018. His tenure was marked by the establishment of the Monetary Policy Committee and the successful implementation of a flexible inflation targeting framework, which helped bring down India’s retail inflation significantly. Despite stepping down amid policy disagreements with the government, citing personal reasons, Patel’s expertise in monetary policy continues to be highly respected. Prior to this, he served as deputy governor of the central bank and held important positions at the IMF and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

Following his RBI tenure, Patel led the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) from 2020, further enhancing his credentials in economic policy research. His appointment as IMF Executive Director marks a full circle in his career, returning to the international stage where he started more than three decades ago. He takes over from Krishnamurthy Subramanian, whose term was cut short amid controversies.

This appointment is seen as a strategic boost to India’s influence within global financial institutions, reinforcing the country’s role in shaping international economic policies. It is also expected to bring Patel’s deep expertise in monetary economics to bear on the IMF’s decision-making processes, especially relating to South Asia and its neighboring nations.

Dr. Urjit Patel’s return to the IMF underscores his continued relevance and leadership in global economic governance, promising strong advocacy for India and its interests in the evolving international financial landscape.
