Aadhaar

AadhaarBanks have assured the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) that they will achieve the target of Aadhaar enrolment and updation centres by December-end.

The deadline for setting up the centres in 10 per cent of bank branches was October 31. But majority of the banks failed to meet the target with the subscribed time frame. Reportedly, only 2,600 out of 15,000 stipulated branches could set up Aadhaar enrolment and updation centres within their premises.

“The statutory deadline has already passed…Banks have assured us now that by December end, they will have enrolment centres in the 10 per cent of their branches as required by UIDAI,” Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO, UIDAI.

“We will have to hear them…under what circumstances they could not do this (meet the targets) and then come to a judicious view. Let us wait until December end and thereafter we will figure out,” he said.

According to UIDAI, the new deadline for setting up the centres is December 31, 2017.The bank Aadhaar centres are being set up in a bid to ensure better verification process in ensuring convenience to the bank customers.

UIDAI has directed 43 private and public sector banks to set up Aadhaar enrolment and updation centres across 15,315 branches.
