Consumers planning to link their Aadhaar numbers with bank accounts and welfare services may get more time to complete the seeding formalities as Centre has communicated to the Supreme Court regarding pushing the deadline from March 31.
The Centre has said that it needs more time for complete hearing formalities of the case.
“We have extended the deadline in the past and we will extend the deadline again but we may do it by the end of the month to enable the petitioners in the case conclude the arguments,” said Attorney General K.K. Venugopal.
A constitution bench comprising of five-judges namely Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.K. Sikri, A.M. Khanwilkar, D.Y. Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, are undertaking the hearing formalities pertaining to the pleas of the petitioners concerning Aadhaar law.
According to State of Aadhaar Report 2016-17, India has generated 1.14 billion Aadhaar cards (as of March 2017), comprising 85 per cent of the population.
Recently, a senior official from Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) had revealed that nearly 80 per cent of the bank accounts and 60 per cent of the mobile connections have been seeded with Aadhaar.
