I-T dept introduces e-correction facility for PAN, Aadhaar

In a bid to enable a convenient procedure to the users for rectification of their personal details, the income tax department has launched an online facility for permanent account number (PAN) and Aadhaar document.

This facility will help the users in correcting the errors in names and other details in PAN and Aadhaar document, reported The Indian Express.

Along with the facility to link biometric identifier Aadhaar with PAN, the department has also provided two separate hyperlinks on its e-filing website.

While the first hyperlink is to update the changes in existing PAN data or for application of new PAN by an Indian or a foreign citizen, the second hyperlink mentioned in the website is for the individuals who want to update their Aadhaar details by logging into Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal using the unique identity number.

More than 1.22 crore users have already linked their Aadhaar and PAN but the number is still very low as there are more than 25 crore PAN card holders in the country, while Aadhaar has been issued to nearly 111 crore people.

Recently, finance minister Arun Jaitley, through an amendment in the Finance Bill for 2017-18, had made Aadhaar mandatory for filing income tax returns and instructed for linking of PAN with Aadhaar to curb the menace of tax evasion through the use of multiple PAN cards.

Last week, the I-T tax department launched a facility to enable a taxpayer to link his Aadhaar and PAN.

The rule required a person to feed in PAN and Aadhaar number along with his name as per the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) data.

Once the user receives a verification from the UIDAI, the linking will be confirmed. In case of any mismatch in Aadhaar name provided,  OTP will be sent to the mobile number registered with the UIDAI.
