More than 58,000 taxpayers served scrutiny notice for FY 2017-18

I-T Department

The Income Tax (I-T) department has served notices of scrutiny to more than 58,000 taxpayers who had filed their ITR for the Financial Year 2017-18.

Under the e-Assessment Scheme 2019 for Income Tax Return (ITR) filed for the Assessment Year (AY) 2018-19, the I-T department has listed out 58,322 cases to be scrutinised.

The department served e-notice before September 30.

Experts feel that there has been a steep rise in the number of scrutiny notices that are issued this year. Those who have got notices include a lot of those who have declared foreign income and assets in their ITR.

The I-T department can pick ITRs for scrutiny up to six months from the end of the financial year in which the return was filed.

So, in case the tax return for FY17-18 was filed on or before July 31, 2018, the scrutiny notice can be issued this September 30, 2019.
