Sh. Nagaraju Maddirala, IAS (TR: 1993), has been named as the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, succeeding Vivek Joshi. Nagaraju Maddirala completed his MA in Philosophy from UoH during 1988-90 and also served as the President of the UoH Students’ Union during his tenure. In 2019, he returned to his alma mater to deliver a lecture on the Economic Reforms of the 1990s as part of the Alumni Speaker Series.
Before his new appointment, Sh. Nagaraju served as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal since November 2020, following a brief stint as Joint Secretary. His tenure in the Coal Ministry was marked by significant reforms, including the transparent auctioning of over 115 coal mines and steering India’s coal production to a record-breaking one billion tons this year.

Sh. Nagaraju’s experience extends beyond Indian borders, having served in the Ministry of Finance, and Department of Economic Affairs, as Director in the Japan/North America and World Bank Divisions. He later became an Advisor to the Executive Director at the World Bank in Washington, DC, from 2008 to 2012. His academic pursuits include executive education at Harvard University on Trade Negotiations, a visiting fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and a research scholarship at Stonehill College.
This appointment underscores Sh. Nagaraju’s vast experience and contributions to governance and public administration positioned him to play a pivotal role in the country’s financial landscape.
