NPCI BHIM to Introduce Biometric UPI Payments, Expands Bank Network

NPCI

New Delhi: National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is strengthening the capabilities of its digital payments platform BHIM with the introduction of biometric authentication for UPI transactions, alongside expansion of its banking network.

According to Lalitha Nataraj, CEO of NPCI BHIM, the platform is set to roll out biometric-based UPI payments using fingerprint and facial recognition, enabling users to authenticate transactions without entering a PIN. The feature will allow payments of up to ₹5,000 and is expected to be fully rolled out within the coming days.

The initiative aims to simplify digital payments for users who may find PIN-based authentication inconvenient while also improving accessibility and security for everyday transactions.

Alongside the biometric rollout, NPCI BHIM is also expanding its banking ecosystem. Two additional banks are expected to join the platform this year, building on the recent successful integration with Canara Bank.

The move is expected to help banks reduce the cost of developing and maintaining their own payment applications by leveraging BHIM’s white-label infrastructure while enabling a broader digital payments reach across the country.
