PayPal launched PayPal World, bringing UPI payments to the global stage

PayPal

PayPal has introduced PayPal World, an innovative global payments platform created in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) International, Tenpay Global, Mercado Pago, and Venmo. This pioneering development enables Indian users to make cross-border payments using their UPI wallets for the first time, effectively removing traditional obstacles associated with international shopping, remittances, and merchant acceptance.

With PayPal World, Indian consumers can seamlessly pay on global e-commerce sites or send money overseas using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mirroring the convenience they experience within India.

The platform integrates some of the world’s leading digital wallets—including PayPal, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL/UPI), Weixin Pay (Tenpay Global), Mercado Pago, and Venmo—into a unified ecosystem that offers effortless interoperability. Merchants who already accept PayPal can now also accept payments from UPI and other major wallets without requiring further integration or additional development resources. This instantly expands their reach to nearly two billion users worldwide, thereby significantly broadening the addressable market for both businesses and consumers. By allowing users to transact internationally with familiar local wallets, PayPal World simplifies cross-border commerce and remittance, delivering a secure, fast, and user-friendly payment experience.

Built on open commerce APIs, the platform boasts robust security measures and a multi-region cloud infrastructure to ensure stability, low latency, and high availability. Beyond its current capabilities, PayPal World has an ambitious roadmap that includes support for emerging payment technologies such as agentic shopping, dynamic payment buttons, and stablecoin transactions, positioning itself as a future-ready solution in the evolving payments landscape. For Indian shoppers, the process is straightforward: when checking out on an international website that accepts PayPal, they can simply choose to pay via their familiar UPI app without the need for an international PayPal account. Merchants, on the other hand, benefit from immediate access to a vast global customer base using their homegrown wallets with no changes on their acceptance side.

Furthermore, PayPal World facilitates easy peer-to-peer payments and remittances across borders, enabling smooth funds transfers not only between PayPal accounts but also across Venmo and other integrated wallets. This launch marks a significant milestone in digital payments interoperability and cross-border financial inclusion, accelerating UPI’s global reach and fostering seamless international payment experiences for businesses and consumers alike. According to Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International Payments Limited, this integration highlights a shared vision to make cross-border payments more seamless, secure, and inclusive.
