The Reserve Bank of India is now the first and the only Central bank in the world to get one million followers on Twitter. With the milestone, RBI has surpassed US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank on Twitter by emerging as the most popular central bank on the microblogging site.
As per media reports, total number of followers on RBI’s official twitter handle @RBI inflated from 9.66 lakhs on September 27, 2020 to one million.
“RBI Twitter account reaches one million followers today. A new milestone. Congratulations to all my colleagues in RBI,” sataed Governor Shaktikanta Das said in a tweet on Sunday.
On the other hand, the US Federal Reserve, known to be as the the world’s most powerful central bank has just 6.67 lakh Twitter followers and the second most powerful monetary authority in the world, the Frankfurt-headquartered European Central Bank (ECB),has 5.91 lakh followers.
While ECB joined twitter on October 2009, US Fed joined is active since March 2009,
RBI is active on Twitter since January 2012. RBI’s Governor Shaktikanta Das Das has a separate Twitter handle with 1.35 lakh followers. RBI has another Public Awareness twitter handled called @RBI says which has around 11.9 k followers.
