Shaktikanta Das

In a remarkable achievement, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been awarded an “A+” rating by Global Finance magazine for the second consecutive year, ranking him among the top global central bank chiefs. This prestigious recognition highlights his effective leadership and significant contributions to the Indian economy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Das, emphasizing that the award reflects his outstanding leadership at the RBI and his commitment to fostering economic growth and stability in the country. “Congratulations to RBI Governor Shri @DasShaktikanta for this feat, and that too for the second time. This is a recognition of his leadership at the RBI and his work towards ensuring economic growth and stability,” PM Modi expressed on Twitter.

Das shares this elite ranking with Denmark’s Christian Kettel Thomsen and Switzerland’s Thomas Jordan, the only three central bank governors to achieve an “A+” rating. Following them are several notable central bank leaders, including Brazil’s Roberto Campos Neto, Chile’s Rosanna Costa, Mauritius’ Harvesh Kumar Seegolam, Morocco’s Abdellatif Jouahri, South Africa’s Lesetja Kganyago, Sri Lanka’s Nandalal Weerasinghe, and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Hong, who received an “A” rating.

The ratings were published in Global Finance’s Central Banker Report Cards 2024, assessing central bank governors since 1994. This report evaluates the performance of central bank governors from nearly 100 nations, regions, and districts, including the European Union and various central banks from the Caribbean and Africa.

The grading scale ranges from “A+” to “F” and assesses performance in crucial areas such as managing interest rates, controlling inflation, achieving economic growth objectives, and maintaining currency stability.

Other prominent central bank governors, such as Cambodia’s Chea Serey, Canada’s Tiff Macklem, and the USA’s Jerome Hayden Powell, received an “A-” rating, reflecting their respective contributions to their nations’ economies.

Das’ continued recognition underscores the importance of effective monetary policy and economic management in a rapidly changing global environment, positioning India for sustained growth and stability.
