RBI set to release new Rs 20 currency note soon

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is planning to release new currency notes Rs 20 currency note with additional features, as stated in a document released by the central bank.

RBIThe apex bank has already introduced new currency notes in the denominations worth Rs 10, Rs 50, Rs 100, and Rs 500, apart from releasing Rs 200 and Rs 2,000 bank notes. The Mahatma Gandhi new series banknotes are being released since November 2016.

The newly issued notes are in various sizes and colours and are quite different from the previously issued notes.

The old notes except the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes continue to remain in use.

As per the RBI data, nearly 4.92 billion pieces of Rs 20 note are in circulation as on March 31, 2016. The number multiplied more than double to about 10 billion pieces by March 2018.

The Rs 20 banknotes account for 9.8 percent of the total number of notes in circulation at the end of March 2018.
