SEBI names Madhabi Puri Buch as chairperson

The Appointments Committee of the cabinet has named Madhabi Puri Buch as the next chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

SEBI has appointed Madhabi for an initial period of three years, reads the official government communique.

She replaces Ajay Tyagi whose term will end on Monday.

Madhabi Puri Buch is SEBI’s tenth head and its first woman chair. Her appointment is SEBI’s first such chair selection that has been done private sector after more than 15 years.

Buch was first appointed as a whole-time member at SEBI in April 2017. She received several extensions and her previous role at the regulator ended in October 2021.

Earlier, Buch served as a consultant to the New Development Bank in Shanghai, China. She was the head of the Singapore office of the private equity firm Greater Pacific Capital.

She also served as the managing director and chief executive officer at ICICI Securities Ltd. and as an executive director on the board of ICICI Bank Ltd.

Buch holds an MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and is a graduate in mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, New Delhi
