WhatsApp set to revolutionise digital payments with UPI Lite integration

UPI Lite

WhatsApp is reportedly working on enhancing its payment system by integrating UPI Lite, a feature designed to streamline small, frequent transactions. According to a report by Android Authority, the messaging giant is testing this feature in its latest beta version (v2.25.5.17), which could position WhatsApp as a stronger competitor against Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm in India’s booming digital payments space.

A teardown of the beta version has revealed code snippets related to UPI Lite, indicating that the feature is still under development. Unlike regular UPI transactions, which require real-time authentication, UPI Lite allows users to preload a small balance into a digital wallet. This makes transactions faster, and more reliable and reduces failures during peak hours.

Key aspects of WhatsApp’s UPI Lite integration include:

  • Limited to the primary device – UPI Lite transactions cannot be processed on linked devices.
  • Pin-free payments – Users can make quick, small payments without authentication, similar to existing UPI Lite platforms.

How UPI Lite Enhances WhatsApp Payments

With over 500 million users in India, WhatsApp already supports UPI-based payments, but UPI Lite could make the platform even more convenient for everyday transactions—like paying for street food, transportation, or local shopping. Unlike its competitors, WhatsApp is not yet listed as a UPI Lite-supported app, but this development could change that soon.

Expanding Beyond UPI Lite – Bill Payments on WhatsApp

In addition to UPI Lite, WhatsApp is reportedly working on integrating bill payment options, allowing users to pay utility bills, recharge mobile plans, and more directly within the app.

While there is no official timeline for the rollout, these updates could significantly boost WhatsApp’s payment ecosystem, making it a more comprehensive financial tool for Indian users.
