Aadhaar face authentication to complete by July 10: UIDAI

Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar CardThe Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has directed the biometric device manufacturers to conclude the final face authentication process with registered devices by 10 July.

The process is aimed to ensure that the certified registered biometric devices can facilitate face authentication and are available with the financial institutions before 1 August, the date of implementation of face authentication.

Facial recognition was supposed to be available on registered devices from 1 July but it missed the deadline as UIDAI asked for more time to prepare for the rollout.

UIDAI introduced two categories of Authentication User Agencies (AUAs)—an entity involved in offering Aadhaar-enabled services. First category is local AUA, a limited know-your-customer (KYC) category, and secondly, a global AUA, that have access to e-KYC through the Aadhaar number.

An AUA can either be a government, public or a private legal agency registered in India that can use Aadhaar authentication offered by UIDAI.

While banks, payments banks, regional banks, small finance banks, cooperative banks, have been categorised as global AUAs.

Prepaid payment instruments, Non-Bank Financial Companies (NBFCs), telecom operators and non-life insurance companies are classified among local AUAs.
