WhatsApp appoints a Grievance Officer for India to control fake news

In a bid to keep a tap on the rising menace of fake messages circulated via the messaging app, WhatsApp has appointed a new Grievance Officer for India.

The new recruitment has been made in the wake of the recent order from the government warning both Facebook and its messaging app WhatsApp pertaining to the rumors being circulated using the platform.

The centre said that it will treat both the platforms as the abettor of rumor propagation and if proper measures are not taken to control these activities, they will be subjected to dire legal consequences.

The Grievance Officer will be based out of the US.WhatsApp has made this appointment after being slapped with two notices with the third one under consideration.

It has named Komal Lahiri for the post ‘Grievance Officer for India’ in its website and also formulated a detailed process for users to address concerns and complaints, including those around fake news.

WhatsApp has appointed a Grievance Officer for India and has rolled out a detailed process for users to flag concerns and complaints, including those around fake news. It has added a section within FAQs on its website that reads, “You (users) can contact the Grievance Officer with complaints or concerns, including the following: WhatsApp’s Terms of Service; and Questions about your account.”

The popular messaging app has over 200 million users in India and it also plans to launch its payments division soon in the country. However, it is awaiting necessary approvals from the regulators and has been asked to appoint executives in India for the same.

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is reviewing its progress pertaining to the issue.
