Cyber Resilience in the Age of AI

Shashi Kant Dahuja, Executive Director, Shriram General Insurance

“There are only two kinds of organizations today – those that know they have been attacked and those that don’t yet know.” This quote has never been more relevant than in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is revolutionizing every aspect of business – from underwriting and fraud detection to customer service and predictive analytics. Yet, the same technology is empowering cybercriminals with unprecedented capabilities. AI-generated phishing emails, deepfake voice scams, automated malware, and intelligent ransomware are transforming cybercrime into a trillion-dollar global industry. As cyber threats evolve faster than traditional defenses, organizations must rethink their strategy. The focus can no longer remain solely on cybersecurity; it must evolve into cyber resilience – the ability to anticipate, withstand, recover from, and rapidly adapt to cyber incidents while ensuring uninterrupted business operations.

Cybercrime is Growing Faster than Ever

The economic impact of cybercrime has reached unprecedented levels.

Industry estimates suggest that global cybercrime losses have increased from USD 3 trillion in 2015 to approximately USD 10.5 trillion in 2025, making cybercrime one of the world’s largest economic risks. India, driven by rapid digital transformation, cloud adoption, and its status as one of the world’s largest digital payment ecosystems, has become an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals. Financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and government organizations remain among the most frequently attacked sectors.

Major incidents such as NotPetya, Colonial Pipeline, and India’s Star Health and Angel One cyber events demonstrate that the financial consequences extend far beyond data theft. Business interruption, reputational damage, regulatory scrutiny, and the erosion of customer trust often become even more expensive than the initial attack itself.

AI: The Greatest Opportunity – and the Greatest Threat

The relationship between AI and cybersecurity is best described as a double-edged sword.

AI Empowers Attackers AI Empowers Defenders
Deepfake voice & video scams  Real-time threat detection
AI-generated phishing  Intelligent fraud detection
Automated malware Predictive risk analytics
Identity theft  Automated incident response

Cybercriminals are increasingly using AI to automate attacks, clone voices, manipulate identities, and launch highly personalized phishing campaigns at scale. At the same time, organizations are deploying AI-powered Security Operations Centres (SOCs), behavioural analytics, and predictive threat intelligence to identify attacks before they escalate. The future of cybersecurity will not be about humans versus hackers – it will increasingly be AI versus AI.

Cyber Insurance: A Critical Pillar of Business Resilience

Today’s cyber insurance is no longer limited to reimbursing financial losses. Modern policies provide organizations with immediate access to forensic investigators, cyber lawyers, crisis communication experts, ransomware negotiators, and incident response specialists. In many cases, these expert services help minimize losses and restore operations much faster than financial compensation alone.

With India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act strengthening accountability for data protection, cyber insurance is expected to become an integral component of enterprise risk management, particularly for organizations handling sensitive customer information.

The Six Pillars of Cyber Resilience

A truly resilient organization builds its cyber strategy around six fundamental pillars:

  • Strong Board Governance with cyber risk integrated into business strategy.
  • AI-enabled Risk Assessment to identify evolving threats.
  • Robust Incident Response Plans with regular crisis simulations.
  • Secure Backup & Disaster Recovery to minimize downtime.
  • Continuous Employee Awareness to combat phishing and social engineering.
  • Comprehensive Cyber Insurance to manage financial, legal, and operational consequences.

Looking Ahead

The future belongs to organizations that prepare for disruption rather than assume immunity from it. Cyber resilience is no longer an IT initiative – it is a strategic business capability that safeguards reputation, customer trust, and long-term growth.

In an AI-driven world, the defining question for business leaders is no longer “Can we prevent every cyberattack?” Instead, it is “How quickly can we recover, continue serving our customers, and emerge stronger?”

Those organizations that combine advanced technology, skilled people, robust governance, and comprehensive cyber insurance will be best positioned to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and unpredictable digital economy.
