LIC surpasses SBI to become the most valued PSU with Rs. 5.64L crore market-cap

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has again become the most valuable listed public sector company, overtaking State Bank of India (SBI) in market capitalization.

The current market capitalization of LIC is Rs. 5.64 lakh crore, while that of SBI is Rs. 5.63 lakh crore. In July 2022, SBI outperformed LIC in terms of market capitalization.

As of January 16, 2024, LIC’s market capitalization had overtaken that of SBI, a significant achievement given the latter’s long-standing dominance in the banking sector. The top five insurance companies in India, by market capitalization, are presently LIC, Bajaj Finserv Ltd, SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd, HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd, and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd. The spike in LIC shares has played a role in this transition, with the company’s stock exceeding its listing day price and exceeding the pace at which shares were allocated to policyholders.

LIC’s growth can be due to a variety of causes, including a persistent emphasis on extending its new business premium, which has greatly strengthened its market position. This growth, however, comes at a time when the market’s float is relatively modest, with the government now holding a significant 96% share in LIC.

This development signifies a potential shift in the landscape of PSU companies in India, with LIC emerging as a leading entity. It not only underscores LIC’s financial strength but also the trust it has garnered from investors. The change in market cap rankings could potentially reshape investor strategies and influence the broader financial sector in India as it continues to evolve.
