The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has named ex-IAS Pramod Agrawal, the former CEO of Coal India, as the new chairman of the BSE. The appointment will begin on January 17, 2024. “SEBI has granted its approval for the appointment of Shri Pramod Agrawal as Chairman on the Governing Board of the Company with effect from January 17, 2024,” the stock market stated in a regulatory statement.
The BSE Board of Directors accepted Agrawal’s appointment as Chairman of the Governing Board on December 13 because the tenure of SS Mundra, Chairman and Public Interest Director, expires on January 16, 2024. Mundra, a former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, was appointed chairman of the BSE in May 2022.
Agrawal, an IAS officer from the 1991 batch, is currently one of the company’s public interest directors. From February 2020 to June 2023, he was the chairman of Coal India.
Prior to becoming the Maharatna coal mining behemoth’s CEO, he was the Principal Secretary of the Madhya Pradesh Government’s Departments of Technical Education, Skill Development & Employment, and Labour.
Agrawal has an IIT education, having earned a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai in 1986 and an M.Tech in Design Engineering from the IIT Delhi in 1988.
He has nearly three decades of administrative expertise in the fields of public administration, urban development, public health engineering, public works, and transportation.
Agrawal worked as the managing director of Madhya Pradesh Finance Corporation, the chairman-cum-managing director of Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company, and the chief executive officer of Madhya Pradesh Rural Development Authority as a bureaucrat. He was also the Collector of Madhya Pradesh’s Morena and Mahasamund Districts.
