UIDAI rolls out Aadhaar authentication portal to empower private sector

Aadhaar authentication

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to introduce a dedicated Aadhaar authentication portal next week, streamlining the approval process for both businesses and government agencies. This initiative follows the recent Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules, 2025, notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on January 31.

With the latest regulatory update, Aadhaar authentication is now accessible beyond government services, allowing private enterprises in fintech, e-commerce, healthcare, travel, and hospitality to verify user identities seamlessly. UIDAI has issued 141 crore Aadhaar numbers, facilitating over 14,000 crore authentication transactions to date. Presently, more than 550 entities, including 230+ from the BFSI sector, are leveraging Aadhaar authentication.

The upcoming authentication portal will enable businesses and government bodies to submit applications and justify their use cases to the respective ministries or departments. UIDAI will review the proposals and provide recommendations, after which MeitY will issue final approvals. Once sanctioned, the concerned ministry will formally notify the applicant, granting access to Aadhaar authentication services.

Speaking at the Bharat FinTech Summit in Mumbai, Manish Bhardwaj, Deputy Director General, UIDAI, emphasised that expanding Aadhaar authentication will strengthen security, reduce fraud, and streamline digital verification. He noted that the banking and financial sector (BFSI) has already benefited from Aadhaar-based e-KYC and digital banking, and now, other industries can integrate it to enhance operational efficiency.

Currently, 90 million Aadhaar authentication transactions are conducted daily, and UIDAI anticipates that the new system will accelerate digital transformation across multiple sectors, making identity verification faster and more secure.
