Cashfree Opens Hosted Checkout to AI Shopping Agents

Cashfree Payments on 6 November 2026 opened hosted checkout to AI shopping agents via WebMCP, cutting token use over 40% while shoppers keep final auth.

Cashfree Payments on 6 November 2026 launched Checkout for Agents, a WebMCP-based layer that lets artificial intelligence (AI) shopping agents read the order total and select a payment method on Cashfree’s hosted checkout, without merchants changing any code. Final payment authorisation — OTP, UPI PIN or equivalent — stays with the human shopper.

The launch is distinct from Cashfree’s earlier Relay AI Super Agents for payment operations, which automate back-office workflows for SMBs. Checkout for Agents targets the merchant checkout itself so personal AI assistants can complete more of the buy journey before handing control back to the customer.

How Cashfree Checkout for Agents works

Traditional web checkouts are built for human clicks. AI agents often have to parse HTML, infer what each button means and burn large numbers of tokens — Cashfree cited an average of nearly 2 million tokens to decode a page before a transaction. Built on the open-source WebMCP (model context protocol), Checkout for Agents exposes a defined set of actions to the agent, such as reading the amount payable and choosing among available payment modes.

Cashfree says the approach can cut token consumption by more than 40% and reduce drop-offs at the payment layer. Every merchant already on Cashfree’s hosted checkout can use the feature with no integration change. Agents can see order amount, items and payment methods; personally identifiable information is masked before it is shared, and agents are not allowed to enter card details via WebMCP. A UPI payment, for example, is still authorised with the customer’s PIN inside their own UPI app.

“With WebMCP, our aim was to help agents make the checkout process more seamless and efficient. This is the first stage of our agentic payments roadmap. At this point, humans continue to stay in loop for reviewing the final order and authenticating the payment,” cofounder Reeju Datta told ET AI.

Why agentic commerce matters for Indian payments

Agent-led shopping is still early. Datta said AI agents account for less than 1% of checkout sessions across Cashfree merchants, but agent traffic has grown about 4–5X year on year and converts about 5X better than SEO traffic, with higher lifetime value.

The same shift is visible across the ecosystem: Razorpay’s partnership with OpenAI for ChatGPT ads, Gnani.ai and Razorpay’s agentic voice-payments platform, and ChatGPT’s integration of UPI for shopping all point to conversational and agent-led commerce riding India’s rails — against a backdrop of record UPI volumes in October 2026.

What Cashfree brings to the table

Founded in 2015 by Reeju Datta and Akash Sinha, Cashfree Payments offers payment gateway, cross-border payments, payouts and banking APIs. The company says it processes about $80 billion in annual total payment volume for more than 10 lakh businesses, including MakeMyTrip, Zomato, CRED and Delhivery. Preserving existing authorisation steps means Checkout for Agents does not create a new path for an agent to approve a payment on its own.

Reporting on the launch first appeared in Inc42 and ET AI on 6 November 2026; Cashfree has also published broader guidance on its payment stack for the agentic ecosystem.

Key takeaways

  • Cashfree launched Checkout for Agents on 6 November 2026 so AI shopping agents can read order totals and select payment methods on hosted checkout with no merchant code changes.
  • Final authentication (OTP, UPI PIN) stays with the human; agents cannot enter card details via WebMCP, and PII is masked.
  • Cashfree claims over 40% token reduction; agents are under 1% of sessions today but traffic is growing 4–5X YoY and converting about 5X better than SEO.

FAQ

Do merchants need to change their Cashfree integration?

No. Cashfree says Checkout for Agents covers all merchants on its hosted checkout and requires no code changes or technical updates.

Can an AI agent approve a payment on its own?

No. The shopper still reviews the final order and authenticates with OTP, UPI PIN or the existing authorisation step; agents are limited to earlier checkout actions.

How is this different from Cashfree Relay?

Relay AI Super Agents automate end-to-end payment operations for SMBs. Checkout for Agents is a merchant-facing checkout layer for AI shopping assistants.
