The government has announced the appointment of Girija Subramanian as the new chairman and managing director (CMD) of New India Assurance, the largest general insurer in India. Subramanian will hold this esteemed position from June 2024, until she reaches the age of superannuation or until further orders are issued.
Girija Subramanian boasts an impressive academic and professional background. She holds a bachelor’s degree in statistics and is a fellow member of the Insurance Institute of India. Additionally, she is an associate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute in London. Subramanian’s career in the insurance industry began in 1988 as a direct recruit officer at GIC Re, where she gained experience in various reinsurance departments, including aviation, life, health, and property classes. With over 34 years in the sector, she brings a wealth of expertise to her new role at New India Assurance.

Prior to this appointment, Subramanian served as the CMD of AIC of India from September 2022. Her tenure at AIC of India was marked by significant contributions to the company’s growth and operations. She succeeds Neerja Kapur, who retired in April, leaving the CMD position at New India Assurance vacant.
Subramanian’s appointment comes after a rigorous selection process conducted by the government’s headhunting organization, FSIB, in March. Competing with other qualified general managers, Subramanian’s selection underscores her extensive experience and leadership in the insurance industry.
