In order to enable people to pay their electricity bills through their smart phone, Vodafone’s digital wallet service M-Pesa has partnered with electricity distribution companies in Uttar Pradesh. The mobile service provider is offering five per cent cash back on the payment made through the mobile App.
Notably, electricity distribution companies – Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran (PVVNL), Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran (DVVNL) and Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran (MVVNL), provide electricity supply to over 35 lakh households in Uttar Pradesh. With Vodafone M-Pesa’s latest move, these customers will be able to pay their bills easily.
Vodafone has more than 115 lakh subscribers, over 10,000 outlets (or CashIn Points) including Vodafone Company owned stores, franchisees, and multi brand outlets in UP (West). One of the officials said that the facility is aimed at driving financial inclusion further along with enabling subscribers of State Electricity Board with with payments solutions.
Business Head, UP West – Vodafone India, Dilip Kumar Ganta, said that the company is determined to deliver and bring simplified services relevant to the needs of its customers in UP (W). “The association between Vodafone M-Pesa and the key electricity distributing bodies in UP bridges the need for a simple, timely and cashless payment solution for consumers through their mobile phones”.
It may be noted that customers across various segments can access M-Pesa by downloading the M-Pesa App or by dialing a USSD short-code from any feature phone. As an added benefit, new users of M-Pesa can earn 5% cashback on the payment made through the App.
