PB Fintech Q2 Profit Rises 43% to ₹192 Crore as IRDAI Commission Caps Loom

Policybazaar parent PB Fintech grew Q2 FY27 profit 43% to ₹192 crore, but warns IRDAI's proposed commission caps could cut non-life value by up to a third.

PB Fintech, the company behind insurance marketplace Policybazaar and credit marketplace Paisabazaar, grew consolidated net profit 43% year-on-year to ₹192 crore in the September quarter (Q2 FY27), according to results filed with the stock exchanges on 30 October 2026. The strong quarter, however, lands just as the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) weighs caps on distribution commissions that management says could sharply reduce its general insurance revenue.

PB Fintech Q2 FY27 results at a glance

  • Net profit: ₹192 crore, up 43% from ₹135 crore a year ago; PAT margin improved to 9% from 8%.
  • Operating revenue: ₹2,178 crore, up 35% year-on-year.
  • Total insurance premium: ₹9,385 crore, up 38%, with new protection (health and term) premium up 42%.
  • Adjusted EBITDA: ₹216 crore, up 39%; reported EBITDA rose 69% to ₹166 crore.
  • Lending: total disbursals through Paisabazaar of ₹4,739 crore in the quarter, with core lending disbursal up 22%.

The company said its profit is still about 2% of total insurance premium facilitated. Its advisor network, which sells insurance in smaller towns, grew by about 1.3 lakh in the quarter to roughly 5.5 lakh agents, and these distributors contributed 76% of overall gross written premium, Moneycontrol reported.

Why IRDAI’s proposed commission caps matter for Policybazaar

IRDAI’s consultation paper on distribution reforms proposes regulator-set ceilings on commissions, with lower caps for brokers and other “insurance distribution entities” than for insurers’ own agents. It also says premiums should flow directly from customers to insurers and that access to product information should not be used for lead generation. Comments on the draft closed on 25 October 2026, so the rules are not final.

On the post-results call, PB Fintech’s management said the proposals would hit its non-life business much harder than life insurance. Management estimated the net present value of the non-life business could fall by about 25% to 33%, while life insurance economics would stay broadly similar. Because core revenue is split roughly half and half between general and life insurance, a 60% cut in general insurance commissions would lower total core revenue by about 30%.

Management argued that lower distribution costs could make policies cheaper and lift volumes by 15% to 20%, partly offsetting the hit. It ruled out large-scale layoffs, said hiring would slow, and indicated FY28 could be a volatile transition year. Co-founder Yashish Dahiya said the company supports the regulator’s goals of lower mis-selling and deeper penetration and would implement the final framework fully.

What PB Fintech plans next

The company outlined three responses: growing non-insurance revenue as far as the regulator permits, accelerating its ecosystem offerings, and evaluating other ways to strengthen the business. According to an ICICI Direct research note citing management commentary, PB Fintech could even consider applying for its own insurance licence if the economics of its business are not fairly shared with it or passed on to customers.

On the credit side, the group has been widening its product shelf. Its arm PB Money recently received a SEBI online bond platform licence to take retail bond investing end to end via Paisabazaar.

What it means for India’s insurtech and distribution players

PB Fintech’s quarter shows that demand for online health and term cover is still growing quickly. The open question is how much of that growth distributors can keep once commissions are set by the regulator rather than negotiated with insurers. NBFCs have raised similar concerns: the lenders’ body has sought a five-year transition on IRDAI’s commission caps for credit-linked insurance. The final IRDAI framework will decide how India’s insurance marketplaces, bancassurance partners and point-of-sale networks are paid in the years ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How much profit did PB Fintech make in Q2 FY27?

PB Fintech reported consolidated net profit of ₹192 crore for the July–September 2026 quarter, up 43% from ₹135 crore a year earlier, on operating revenue of ₹2,178 crore.

How could IRDAI’s commission caps affect Policybazaar?

Management estimates the proposed caps could cut the value of its non-life business by roughly a quarter to a third, while life insurance would be broadly stable. The caps are still a draft, and the final rules may change.
