Rajiv Ranjan, a veteran central banker renowned for his extensive experience at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer (CRO) of the New Development Bank (NDB) for a five-year term. The NDB Board of Governors announced this move, highlighting Ranjan’s decorated career, which spans over 35 years and includes pivotal roles within the RBI since 1989. Having most recently served as Executive Director and Member of the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) since May 2022, Ranjan is widely recognized for his contributions to monetary policy, liquidity management, and macroeconomic research.
In his new position, Ranjan will oversee NDB’s risk management, strategy, policy development, partnerships, and ESG initiatives, as well as lead the bank’s engagement in global forums focused on climate change and resource mobilisation for development. His experience encompasses heading the Department of Economic and Policy Research at RBI, serving as Economic Policy Expert at the Central Bank of Oman, and working with key international and multilateral institutions such as the G20, IMF, World Bank, BIS, FSB, OECD, SAARC, and other central banks in the Global South.
Ranjan’s leadership is expected to drive NDB’s mandate for strengthening infrastructure and sustainable development projects across BRICS nations and emerging markets. As the bank celebrates its tenth anniversary and continues its work from its Shanghai headquarters, it anticipates Ranjan’s strategic vision will help expand its impact both regionally and globally.

His appointment at NDB, also known as the BRICS Bank, signals a continued commitment to sound financial governance and innovative risk management in international development finance.
