Nandan Nilekani-led Finternet initiative prepares for its highly anticipated launch in 2026. Announced during the Global Fintech Fest 2025, Finternet aims to create a universal digital infrastructure for the seamless tokenisation and exchange of assets, including property, gold, bonds, and financial investments.
Finternet’s core vision is to reshape asset ownership and management by digitising real-world items into programmable, transferable tokens. This innovative architecture is designed to unlock significant economic value by converting traditionally illiquid assets into digital tokens, making transactions more accessible and transparent for banks, financial institutions, and individuals.
At the heart of Finternet is a programmable layer that connects multiple financial ecosystems, supporting real-time transfer, verification, and fractional ownership of assets. Highlighting the initiative’s technological advances, agentic AI plays a crucial role in enabling automated asset management, credit checks, and instant lending. The platform is already undergoing pilot projects with over 30 partners spread across India, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United States.
Industry experts believe Finternet will drive innovation in cross-border transactions, asset-backed lending, and inclusive wealth creation, expanding opportunities for underserved segments. The project’s phased rollout in 2026 is expected to feature sector-specific use cases across various geographies, showcasing practical benefits and real-world scalability.
Finternet’s development builds on India’s success in public digital infrastructure, following transformative projects like UPI and Aadhaar. Its potential to democratise access to credit and financial services is being hailed as a game-changer, promising to unlock dormant assets and enhance economic participation at scale.
