Within one year of Centre’s directive to bank branches and post offices to set up Aadhaar facility on their premises, close to 18,000 centres have introduced enrolment and updation of biometric IDs, said Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
In last year July, UIDAI had asked Public sector Banks (PSBs) to set Aadhaar facility in atleast one out of 10 branches.
“Aadhaar centres are being set up in banks and post offices. So far, about 18,000 centres have been set up in their premises and in the remaining places also, centres will be set up,” said Pandey.
Overall, nearly 26,000 centres would be set up across banks and post offices. The centre is setting up Bank Aadhaar kendras for enabling secure Aadhaar verification.
Nearly 10,000 branches of private and public sector banks have already set up Aadhaar enrolment and updation centres within their premises, as compared to more than 13,800 branches that need to do so.
