India and EU strengthen economic ties as Finance Minister Sitharaman meets EU Commissioners

Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, engaged in discussions with Maria Luis Albuquerque, European Commissioner for Financial Services, Savings and Investments Union, and Piotr Serafin, European Commissioner for Budget, Anti-fraud, and Public Administration, in New Delhi.

The high-level meeting focused on deepening economic collaboration between India and the European Union (EU), with particular emphasis on trade, investment, and the rapidly evolving financial technology (FinTech) sector. Both sides underscored the strong and growing partnership between India and the EU, reaffirming their commitment to expanding mutual cooperation across key economic domains.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Finance highlighted the significance of the discussions, emphasizing India’s role as a critical global partner. The meeting also saw the presence of Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, further underscoring the importance of the engagement.

This visit marks the first official international engagement of the EU College of Commissioners since assuming office in December 2024, following the European parliamentary elections in June 2024. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with the entire EU College of Commissioners, is currently on a two-day visit to India—making it the first-ever visit of its kind.

The leaders explored avenues to enhance regulatory cooperation, strengthen investment policies, and build a more resilient economic framework. With global economic challenges on the rise, India and the EU expressed their commitment to fostering financial inclusion and innovation, particularly through advancements in FinTech.

The discussions concluded with both sides reaffirming their dedication to working closely on strengthening trade relations, investment opportunities, and broader economic cooperation.
