The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) has recommended Ashok Chandra as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB). Chandra, who currently serves as Executive Director (ED) at Canara Bank, is set to succeed the incumbent PNB MD & CEO, Atul Kumar Goel, upon the completion of Goel’s tenure on December 31, 2024.
Chandra brings over three decades of banking experience to the role, having started his career in 1991 as a probationary officer with the erstwhile Corporation Bank. His professional journey spans roles as a branch head in various locations, leadership positions in rural, urban, and metro demographics, and a tenure as chief general manager at Union Bank of India in 2020. He holds a Master’s degree in economics and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers.
In 2018, upon being promoted to general manager, Chandra led Canara Bank’s recovery, legal, and stressed assets management vertical, a key role in managing the bank’s distressed assets portfolio.

Following the FSIB’s recommendation, the decision now awaits approval from the Department of Financial Services (DFS) within the Ministry of Finance, which will then be forwarded to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for final clearance. Upon ACC’s endorsement, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) will officially announce the appointment.
