Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has directed insurers providing health insurers to ensure a clear cut clarification on underwriting policy covering persons with disability, people affected with HIV/AIDs and mental illness.
IRDAI in an order said, “insurer shall evolve a health insurance underwriting policy covering approach and aspects relating to offering health insurance coverage not only to standard lives but also to substandard lives. Further insurance companies shall also comply with various provisions of HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act, 2017 and Mental healthcare Act, 2017.”
The regulator desires all insurers’ targeted population to have complete knowledge on the philosophy that the insurers adopt while adhering to the coverage philosophy of above mentioned categories.
IRDAI has directed all insures to come out with the underwriting philosophy and approach for the three categories under disability, mental illness and HIV/Aids.
All insurers have been directed to comply to the order by 1st October 2020.
